THE city in Germany with the best quality of life? City centre is the fourth most beautiful place of "die ganze Bundesrepublik Deutschland"?? 2

Iris, what are you talking about? That is the city named Münster. I visited last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. I definitely do understand where those awards are coming from.

Let me tell you all about my weekend trip to Münster in this blog. There are so many things to see in Münster like...

Markets

One of the first things I did was visit the Saturday morning market on the Prinzipalmarkt. If you know me a little bit, you know I absolutely love markets (aka obsessed hahah). I like to take my time to stroll around and make sure I do not miss a single stall ( sorry Gina 😉). I like the creativity you'll generally see at markets, the special foods, lovely music and just the overall market vibes. Those "vibes" were also definitely great here in Münster. Good food stalls, fresh fruit and veggies from local farmers and lovely market scenery. The market took place at the iconic "Domplatz" with a beautiful ancient church in the background.

Historic city centre and churches

So, about those churches. Münster has got a beautiful city centre (yes, the one which is crowned as fourth most beautiful place in Germany in 2006 1 ). Wander around along the ancient looking buildings and street tiles, with a beautiful church every few meters. Not only from the outside, also from the inside the sights are beautiful. The Saint Paulus Dom, Saint Lambert's Church, "Liebfrauen Kirche" and Petri Church were a few of my highlights. All a few meters apart from each other, so definitely walkable. The city is also very bikeable, it is called "the bicycle capital of Germany" for a reason.😉

So, after a day of strolling around and enjoying the sights, the evening falls. The sun goes down, the sky gets dark....But the city shines bright (like a diamond in the sky 😜🎵). The streets get a warm, golden glow from the letters on the buildings and little lights everywhere. Christmas decorations become visible and the streets are still filled with people shopping. Most shops are open until 7 pm, so you can shop the night away. 😏

We did not do that though, went home "early", watched a movie and prepared for the next day of exploring the...

Castles around Münster

Apart from the nice city centre, Munster got plenty of other tourist attractions nearby. Some beautiful castles and old land houses like: Schloss Münster, Burg Hülshoff and Schloss Nordkirchen.

In the morning, we visited an old landhouse from the 1300s with a beautiful garden named Vischering Castle. From there we took a 30 minute drive to Schloss Nordkirchen aka " the versailles of Germany". A beautiful palace with a garden to stroll around. Don't get fooled, although the building looks like a palace, it is used as an university nowadays!

Christmas markets

I visited in January but I can imagine the city is absolutely magical during Christmas time (* adds to bucketlist*). With six christmas markets there are more than 300 stalls to see 3 there must be something for everyone! Yes, more than 300 stalls! Lol I apologise in advance for the one who joins me on this christmas trip, I will need a lot of time to 'stroll around' there.

For more information about the markets click here.

But hey, stop dreaming and come to your conclusion. What did think of my weekend trip to Münster and its sights?

With only three hours away Munster was the perfect getaway for me for a weekend. The city was much prettier and got more tourist attractions than I expected. Great atmosphere, nice historic centre, beautiful monuments and churches and.... "gute Brötchen"😉 (good bread).

Also, I was lucky to have a great local host who showed me around for the weekend, which was the cherry on top of my very tasty "munster experience" cake!
